Welcome
There is something perversely ironic in studying "ornamental plant pathology," or what many consider the "ugly" diseases of "beautiful" plants. This website serves as a repository of information on the diagnosis and management of diseases of ornamentals. The very term, "ornamental" is telling: From the Latin 'Ornare' meaning a useful accessory. More recent definitions include "something that lends grace or beauty."
In
the Beckerman laboratory, our focus is on the plant pathology of
horticultural crops. With such a broad charge, our goal is to promote
sustainable production and maintenance of ornamental plants in
the greenhouse, nursery and landscapes. Research, extension and teaching efforts are all directed to promote sustainable disease management.
"Flowers... are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outvalues all the utilities of the world." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1844
