Outreach Events:

The Botany and Plant Pathology Department actively participates in many events throughout Indiana to promote plant science and plant disease education and increase awareness of the research that we do.

Career Exploration Day
Description:
These one hour hands-on learning class periods provide students with a chance to learn about the wonderful world of plant diseases and weed science. We emphasize the importance of the science classes they are or will be taking and discuss undergraduate studies and career opportunities in the areas of botany, plant pathology and weed science.

County and State Fairs
Description:
We participate at County and State fairs by judging weed or plant related 4-H projects, or provide advice and information on plant wellness, weed control, or how plant issues impact your everyday life.

State Fair 2002: Botany and Plant Pathology in Your Backyard
You strolled through a landscaped garden with different kinds of plants and trees and a pond, where you learned about what problems you might have with your yard and garden and where you can go for more information. The display featured information on aquatic plants, aquatic weed problems, and plant diseases.

Farm Progress Show
Description:
The Farm Progress show is the largest of its kind in the Midwest and rotates between Indiana, Iowa, and Illinois. is expected to attract up to 300,000 visitors.

Future Farmers of America (FFA)
Description:
Indiana FFA has a powerful reputation across the nation for producing some of the most incredible, young, leaders who have later become the infrastucture in the agribusiness industry. Out of the nearly 9,000 high school members across the state, approximately 2,000 of them, their advisors, parents and industry sponsors attend the state-wide convention. Our departmental exhibit gave staffers the opportunity to meet and talk with potential recruits for our department’s undergraduate majors: Environmental Plant Studies, and Plant Biology.

Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair
Description:
Purdue University, Eli Lilly, and Great Lakes Chemicals sponsor an annual competition for students from grades 5 through 12 in schools of Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fountain, Jasper, Montgomery, Newton, Pulaski, Tippecanoe, Warren, and White counties. The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology is pleased to present a 1st place award of $50 and 2nd place award of $25 in the area of plant sciences.

Title: "The Mystery Behind Round-Up Ready Soybeans!"

2nd Place: Jimi Giles, Jefferson High School, 11th grade

Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, Inc. (HASTI)
Description:
Each year approximately 2,000 Indiana science teachers, administrators and student teachers attend the two day HASTI Convention in Indianapolis. Purdue has a large exhibitor presence as well as present many of the general sessions. We have many lessons or labs focused at the K-12 level. Talk to us if you're interested in incorporating Botany, Plant Pathology or Weed Science into your biology or agricultural curriculum.

Plant Science Workshops
Description:

A 4-H workshop for members or other youth who will be entering freshman, sophomore, junior or senior high school class in the fall of the current year. The workshop is designed to:

  • train 4-H members to return to their county and serve as trainers or assist with county project workshops
  • teach cutting edge aspects of plant science to youth
  • experience a wide array of information on plant science
  • inform youth about careers in agriculture and educational opportunities at Purdue University

Spring Fest 

Description:

Started in 1998, the Purdue Spring Fest sets up tents, displays and activities all over campus for this week-end gala event, including the Bug Bowl, Horticulture Show, and Petting Zoo. Stop by the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, located inside and outside the Lilly Hall of Life Sciences building, where you'll enjoy hands-on activities for all ages! Learn about common plant parts you eat everyday, fungi and other microbes that cause plant disease, biotechnology and genetic resistance, how plants can protect the environment, weeds in your lawn and garden, and much more!
