Fundamentals of Plant Classification

Laboratory: Meets once per week for 1 hour and 40 minutes

Description: The principles of classification of seed plants, with emphasis on methods of identification in laboratory and field.
Objectives:

1) learn how plants are classified and named based on their phylogenetic relationships.
2) learn and observe the distinguishing characteristics of plant families.

Textbook(s): Plant Systematics: a Phylogenetic Approach, Judd, Campbell, Kellogg, Stephens and Donohue, Sinauer, 2nd; 2002, 0-87893-403-0
Recommended: Spring Flora of Wisconsin, Fawcett
Pre/Corequisites: Prerequisite: BTNY 210. Authorized equivalent courses or consent of instructor may be used in satisfying course pre- and co-requisites.
Notes: Requires class trips. Students will pay individual lodging or meal expenses when necessary. Required for Environmental Plant Study major, Plant Biology major, Weed Science minor, and Plant Biology minor.
