Aquatic Plant Management

Instructor: Dr. Carole Lembi
Description: This 5-week course is designed for students who have an interest in the management of aquatic systems, from ornamental pools to natural lakes to wetlands. Although the majority of the course will deal with control and prevention of excess aquatic growth, we will also cover the planting and establishment of aquatic plants for ornamental purposes and wildlife value.
Objectives:

1) the habitats and structure of aquatic plants and
other useful botanical information pertaining to aquatic
plants
2) the ecology of aquatic plants and characteristics of invasive species
3) aquatic plant identification and problems caused by excessive aquatic plant growth
4) principles and concepts of management: preventive
and mechanical control methods; habitat alteration; biological control methods; chemical control methods (includes chemical classification, toxicity and environmental concerns, application techniques, dosage calculations, specific information on characteristics of aquatic herbicides, algicides, and piscicides; state permit system; how and when to use chemicals)
5) establishing and maintaining aquatic plants in constructed wetlands and water gardens

Notes: This five-week course will give you much of the information you need to pass the Category 5 (Aquatic Pest Control) certification exam. The old course number used to be BTNY 590A.
